Being Unplugged

It’s not really that hard to figure out.

As a 30-something year old dad with a demanding job, it’s not often that you get free time.  I noticed after a while that all I ever did was look at my phone and check Fox News, or some other Republican site, Twitter, Facebook, etc.  I’m sure you’ve heard this by now, but people are learning about this internet dependency.  And some of the most divisive talking points are always politics.

So I stopped.  I got sick at the very beginning of December, and my time of being over-stimulated was put on a halt…for a few weeks, anyhow.  After I came back to work, I realized how angry politics and 24 hour news media and the world at my fingertips made me.  Maybe it’s my age, or the way I grew up, but I knew I was sick of it.  I decided to not watch politics or news and deactivate my social media profiles.

And it’s awesome.  I have so much more free time.  I feel productive.  My mood has improved.  So has my stress level.  So if you’re reading this and you think it may be a good idea to unplug…do it.  Aside from social networks, my streaming video subscriptions, extra email accounts, and even my smartphone have been abandoned.  And I think it’s a great way to start the new year.
